Johanna

Johanna is the fifth child of Fiona (who lives in the Schafer Ranch) and Josef Schafer (deceased). Johanna was born and raised in the area and attended Stoffton Academy. Johanna is only a year younger than her brother Helmut, although most people assume she is older. Despite being the fifth of six children, she is nearly in the middle of the family; she is eleven years younger than her oldest brother Otto and ten years older than her youngest brother Felix. Johanna was a teenager when her father Josef died unexpectedly. Perhaps partially because of this event, Johanna is a devout believer in Yoba. She attends the temple every week, and encourages all of her boarders to attend as well.

When her brother opened the textile mill, Johanna decided to establish a boarding house above the café so that the young people who travelled to Stoffton to work would have a safe and friendly space to live. Johanna has never married, instead using her energies to befriend and care for the women who live with her.

Johanna also spends time with Nadia (the lead teacher at the academy), helping her with the students, especially when they are outside in the playground. Johanna is close to her mother Fiona and misses her older sister who moved away several years ago. Johanna is fond of her brothers and visits most of them, and their families, throughout the week.

Schedule (in brief)

Johanna begins each day by making breakfast for her boarders, followed by a visit with friends or family, lunch at the café, sometimes a second visit, and the evening meal at the café. On Mondays, she visits her brother Otto's ranch in the morning. On Tuesdays, she visits the town square around 9:00 am, and helps monitor recess at the academy in the afternoon. On Wednesdays, she visits her brother Gerhard at the mill. On Thursdays, she visits her brother Helmut at the pickle shop. On Friday, she visits her brother Felix at the flower shop. On Saturday afternoons, she visits with her friend Nadia. On Sundays, she attends the temple of Yoba, and spends the afternoon in her mother Fiona's cottage in Rocky Ford.
