Otto is the oldest son of Fiona (who lives in the Schafer Ranch) and Josef Schafer (deceased). He is the oldest male Schafer in the region and operates Schafer Ranch in Rocky Ford. Otto was born and raised in the area and attended Stoffton Academy. He left to study agriculture at university which is where he met and married his wife. Almost immediately after Otto finished his studies, his father Josef became ill and passed away suddenly only a few years after Otto's youngest brother Felix was born.

Otto shouldered the responsibility of helping his mother run their operation, eventually taking over most of the day-to-day work while he and his wife were having their four children: Josef, Mac, Odo, and Rolf. They named their oldest son Josef in honor of Otto's father. Sadly, after four children and more than thirty years of marriage, Otto's wife passed away. Since that time, Otto has been working steadily on the farm, expanding the property, and adding a shop to their home with his mother's help.

As the oldest of six children, Otto takes his responsibilities seriously and a large part of his identity is that of a dutiful son. As a result, he has somewhat fixed ideas of the roles his own sons should take in their futures; ideas that do not always match with his sons' strengths or desires.

Otto is one of the Selectmen on the Council in Stoffton and enjoys talking to his friends Erik (who he knows from his days at Stoffton Academy) and Ignas (a newer acquaintance) when his duties take him to town.
